Selecting an Attorney
Factors to Consider...
Because of downsizing and the rocky economy, there are attorneys doing real estate closings…who should not be doing real estate closings. Exhibit One: The day before a closing, an attorney recently asked me how to calculate the “mansion tax.” Wow…You should not assume that you will be getting the same level of quality and service irrespective of the fee that's being charged for the closing (the Costco “buying a toaster” approach). When it comes to professionals, you get what you pay for. Selecting an attorney should be based on the professional’s qualifications and experience relative to the complexity of the transaction, the fees to be charged for the matter, recommendations you've received and your own gut reaction about your ability to work with that individual. In my view, each factor should be given equal weight.
