Do I have to go to the closing? Not necessarily. Most apartment closings are just a lot of paper pushing and waiting. People show up late and sometimes the bank doesn’t fund the loan until the last minute. Waiting for photocopies to be made can take half an hour, or longer. In many cases, particularly if you are seller, letting your attorney close by power of attorney can be a time saver and much more efficient. Of course, that all depends on the comfort level you have with your attorney and the nature of your relationship. Sometimes folks are out of town and they have no choice but to let the attorney close with a power. In those cases, arrangements have to be made to fund the closing or to provide for delivery of funds immediately after the closing. For most people, sitting through the drudgery of the closing and reviewing all of the documents, is the best way to complete the process.
